HISTORY OF MODERN AIR SPEED MEASUREMENT

The first anemometers were called Air Meters.

It is said that the Wright Brothers on their historic Flight even had a Air Meter strapped to a wing strut!

The original Air Meter was invented by the late R.M. Lowne an English Inventor in 1865. At the International Inventions Exhibition held in London in 1885, a silver medal was awarded to Mr. Lowne's company for Portable Air Meters.

Air Meters were for over a hundred years the most satisfactory instruments for obtaining accurate measurement of air velocities in Mines, Ventilators, flues etc.

There are Lowne Air Meters still in use measuring accurately after over 50 years of service.
